Located adjacent to our campus “The Nex – Indawo Yethu, the community garden comprises 47 individual allotments where community members grow fruit and vegetables to not only have the option of nourishing food but also the chance to earn a living.
Under the mentorship of a garden trainer, the first group of budding gardeners underwent an intensive 10-weeks community garden, organic food growing and basic health and nutrition training. Supplied with compost, seeds and garden tools, each budding gardener has worked hard to establish their 10sqm allotment.
The harvest provides food security for them and their families and they may also trade their produce for income generation. As part of the agreement, the community gardeners donate 10% of their harvest to soup kitchens and those who assist children and the elderly with nutritious food.
We ask you contribute just R1 a day which adds up to R365 per year.
Your donation will not only help fund general garden maintenance but also seasonal seeds and seedlings, fertiliser and nutrients for the soil, but also support an ongoing training programme for young people who are interested in crafting sustainable gardens for their kitchen table and families.
In addition to the feeling of joy to be able to help and the certainty that you can send children to bed with a full tummy in the evening, your names will be included on request on the “Tree of Gratitude- – Plant a Seed of HOPE” donors’ sign.
